Artist Statement

My current work is inspired from the idea of people's attachments to certain objects. Objects and possessions have often been thought of as "extensions of the self," meaning that people put a significant amount of value on items, in particular those items that represent a person or a memory. Even the most ordinary objects can become important simply because of the emotional connections people have with these objects. These types of attachments occur as early as childhood with children and their attachment blankets.

In this particular body of work, I explore objects that are meaningful to me. Not only is the subject matter personal, but the paintings themselves become objects that are extensions of myself, in that they reveal memories or people from my past. I hope that based on the technique and the ways in which I render each piece that viewers will be able to relate to different emotions embedded in each piece. My goal is not to force opinions onto the audience, but rather to share different emotions and memories with others. Although the objects that inspire this body of work may be personal to me, many people have similar attachments to objects that hold meaning to them, and in that way object attachment becomes a universal concept.
